In the Royal Manticoran Navy, a commissioned officer usually has studied at Saganami Island Naval Academy as a midshipman and after graduation and training cruise receives a commission from the sovereign as an Ensign in the navy.
An officer who previously served as an enlisted spacer before receiving a commission is known colloquially as a "Mustang." In TRMN, members automatically start at E-1 upon signing up for the organization, so almost all commissioned officers in the club are mustangs.
In Honorverse canon, an enlisted spacer who is awarded the Osterman Cross is offered a commission as O-1.
Other uses of the word officer
Royal Manticoran Merchant Marine crews are led by the Ship's Master, assisted by a First Officer, and depending on the ship and crew size, a Second Officer, Third Officer, etc. Also see:
