Captain
Captain(abbrev: CAPT) is an officer paygrade within the Grayson Space Navy and the Republic of Haven Navy. It holds the equivalent military paygrade of O-6 within The Royal Manticoran Navy: The Official Honor Harrington Fan Association, Inc. and can be a headquarters department head or command of a ship. A captain is referred to as a "captain," unless there is more than one on the same ship, in which case the ship's commander is "captain" and other captains are given the honorific promotion to "Commodore."
In the Royal Manticoran Navy, there are two captain ranks, junior O-6A and senior grade O-6A. CAPTJG's can command up to a battlecruiser and are not considered for future flag rank. After a captain makes "list," CAPTSG's command the largest ships in the RMN, and will eventually move into flag rank through seniority. However, there is no guarantee that a billet will be available upon promotion.
This rank can also refer to an officer paygrade within the Royal Manticoran Marine Corps and the Royal Manticoran Army. It holds the equivalent military paygrade of O-3 within The Royal Manticoran Navy: The Official Honor Harrington Fan Association, Inc. and can be a company commander or a staff person. A captain is referred to as a "captain," unless there is more than one on the same ship, in which case the ship's commander is "captain" and other captains are given the honorific promotion to "Major."
Honorverse
In peacetime, a naval Captain would have served three years as an Commander, between 21 and 23 years in the service, and been reviewed by a Officer Promotion Board. Board review is extremely difficult, confirming only half of eligible candidates. [1]
In peacetime, an army or marine Captain would have served two years as an 1st Lieutenant, a total of four years in the service, and been reviewed by a Officer Promotion Board. However, promotion is almost always confirmed. Doctors, lawyers, and other specialists are also direct commissioned to this rank.[1]
TRMN
For naval personnel, if the spacer has completed their Captain (junior grade) Exam, and served as an Commander) for 18 months Time in Grade, they are eligible to be promoted to this rank, but needs to confirmed by an Officer Promotion Board.[2] Promotions to Captain (senior grade) is now only by appointment, if a billet is available that requires it, such as a ship division or squadron as per Admiralty Order 1510-01.
For army or marine personnel, if the spacer has completed their RMMC Captain Exam, and served as an 1st Lieutenant) for six months Time in Grade, they are eligible to be promoted to this rank, but needs to confirmed by an Officer Promotion Board.
