Field Marshal (abbrev: FM) is an flag paygrade within the Royal Manticoran Marine Corps and the Royal Manticoran Army. It holds the equivalent military paygrade of F-5 within The Royal Manticoran Navy: The Official Honor Harrington Fan Association, Inc. and is usually is the Deputy Commandant of the Marine Corps or Deputy Marshal of the Army. A soldier who has received their fourth star is referred to as "field marshal" or simply "marshal."
Honorverse
In peacetime, a Field Marshal would have served several years as an General, been reviewed by a Flag Officer Promotion Board, approved by the House of Lords, and confirmed by the First Lord of the Admiralty in the name of the monarch. Board review is extremely difficult, as there is only one billet. [1]
TRMN
If the soldier has completed their Field Marshal Exam, they are eligible to be promoted to this rank, but needs to be confirmed by a Flag Officer Promotion Board. [2] Promotions to Field Marshal are now only by appointment, if a Deputy Marine Commandant or Deputy Marshal of the Army is needed as per Admiralty Order 1510-01.
