Ensign(abbrev: ENS) is an officer paygrade within the Royal Manticoran Navy, the Grayson Space Navy, and the Republic of Haven Navy. It holds the equivalent military paygrade of O-1 within The Royal Manticoran Navy: The Official Honor Harrington Fan Association, Inc. and is the lowest commissioned officer rank. An ensign can be referred to as an "ensign" only.
Honorverse
In peacetime, an Ensign would have received a commission after graduating from Saganami Island Academy. Enlisted personnel could "go Mustang"[1] and be recommended to go to the Academy to become an officer. In times of emergency, Fleet Officer Candidate Schools and accelerated Academy programs can promote enlisted personnel to commissioned ranks. .[2]
