Re: | Award of Parliamentary Medal of Valor (Admiralty Order 2203-03) |
On July 19, 2021, Earl White Lion was traveling on the highway in New Mexico when he came upon a truck pulled over by the side of the road. The truck was, according to the Earl, “smoking profusely,” and he observed the driver opening the hood. The truck was carrying as a cargo 30,000 pounds of hay. By the time Earl White Lion had safely pulled his car over to render assistance—crossing six lanes of active highway traffic on foot to render said assistance, he observed that the engine was now on fire and the driver was attempting to put the fire out with a hand-held fire extinguisher. The Earl quickly assessed that the fire was out of control, and threatened the safety of both the driver and himself if they stayed. He convinced the driver to withdraw from the area.
While doing so he was proven correct, when the engine suffered a minor explosion. 15 seconds after that a fuel tank ruptured and sprayed burning fuel into the area the driver (and Earl White Lion) had just been standing in. It also sprayed fuel across multiple sections of the road, shutting down traffic lanes.
Earl White Lion then contacted 911, and began directing traffic to avoid the affected areas. When Santa Fe Fire Department officials arrived on scene, it took them two hours to put out the fire, and a spokesman described the truck as being “fully engulfed in flame.”
The incident was also reported on national news service
The statement from Mr. Salazar confirms the danger of the situation: “He proceeded to help me gather my thoughts and move away from the vehicle before the fuel tanks went up...”
The Parliamentary Medal of Valor is awarded “...for providing lifesaving medical assistance above and beyond the call of duty. To qualify for this award, the recipient must save a life. Providing a first aid kit at an accident scene would not qualify. Performing first aid in a situation where the recipient would have died without your intervention would qualify. Note that the situation in which life saving services are rendered need not be life threatening for the TRMN personnel delivering the services.”
But for the actions of Lord William, Mr. Salazar would have been standing next to his truck attempting to put the fire out when the brake line exploded and the fuel tank ruptured, and he would have been covered in burning gasoline. With no one having called 911 and no other passersby present at the time to assist4, it is almost certain that he would have suffered life ending injuries. Mr. Salazar, by any reasonable judgment, owes his life to Lord William’s actions. The Earl also took control of the scene and helped ensure that vehicles were aware of the hazard, preventing further injuries.
In addition, while it is not required by the award that the TRMN member be put in danger themselves, Lord William clearly was willing to put himself in danger as well. But for his judgment in the critical moment, he would have been in the area that was covered in burning gasoline as well, and suffered the same injuries. He was willing to risk injury to himself to render aid to a bystander.
The Houses of Parliament have voted to award the Parliamentary Medal of Valor to William Knight, Earl White Lion for these actions.
In Honour of the Queen!
