Re: Flagship Selection by Flag Officers (Admiralty Order 1612-02)

It is long standing military tradition that Flag officers get to choose what ship they will “fly their flag” from as they serve in senior command positions. In an effort to keep the military flavor of the RMN alive in our organization, and to promote interaction and camaraderie amongst all members, flag officers will be able to select their flagship and participate as a supernumerary member of that ship’s crew, including the various fleet and RMN wide challenges. For all intents and purposes, the Flag Officer will be a member of the flagship’s crew, but will NOT count against the crew enlisted to officer ratio as set forth by AO 1511-02.

However, only one flag officer may select each ship as their flagship, it is not possible for a ship to serve as flagship to two different flag officers. If more than one Flag Officer identifies the ship as their flagship, the senior officer will be the one who is officially the Flag Officer in residence. All other flag officers may participate with the ship as a member of the crew, if they so choose, but may not be listed as part of the ship’s crew for competition and award purposes if their presence causes the chapter to violate AO 1511-02.

Flag Officers who choose to select a Flagship do not fall into the Chain of Command for any fleet their Flagship may be part of; the intent of this AO is to encourage Flag Officers to participate with local chapters in their area, not to encourage them to exercise any form of local command. Flag Officers not assigned as part of the Command Structure of a Fleet are supernumerary to the Fleet for command purposes, but are able to be counted as part of ship crews for competition and other fun purposes within the Fleet.

If you are a Staff Officer, and at the Rank of Commodore (F-1) or above, your Flag would automatically be subsequent to the Flag Officer you report to, and would not be eligible for a Flag Ship under the above regulations.

In Honour of the Queen!

Clarifications

  • Q: Do space lords and deputy space lords count as staff officers in regards to this AO?[1]
    • A: Space Lords, yes...by definition the deputies would fall under the last clause.
