Officer
An officer is one who has a position of authority in a hierarchical organization, especially in military, police or government organizations.[1]
In the context of The Royal Manticoran Navy: The Official Honor Harrington Fan Association, Inc. (TRMN), and the Honorverse military services which it simulates, the word officer most commonly refers to commissioned officers, but can also encompass Warrant Officers. Although there are non-commissioned officers, "officer" usually is meant to differentiate from enlisted personnel. "Officers and enlisted" would be a term encompassing all personnel in the military.
Commissioned Officers
Commissioned ranks include paygrades O-1 up through flag ranks, the highest uniformed ranks of the military:
Code | Naval | Army & Marines |
---|---|---|
O-1 | Ensign (ENS) | 2nd Lieutenant (2LT) |
O-2 | Lieutenant, junior grade (LTJG) | 1st Lieutenant (1LT) |
O-3 | Lieutenant, senior grade (LTSG) | Captain (CPT) |
O-4 | Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) | Major (MAJ) |
O-5 | Commander (CDR) | Lieutenant Colonel (LTCOL) |
O-6 | Captain[2] (CAPTJG), (CAPTSG) | Colonel (COL) |
F-1 | Commodore (CDRE) | Brigadier General (BGEN) |
F-2 | Rear Admiral (RADM) | Major General (MGEN) |
F-3 | Vice Admiral (VADM) | Lieutenant General (LGEN) |
F-4 | Admiral (ADM) | General (GEN) |
F-5 | Fleet Admiral (FADM) | Field Marshal (FM) |
F-6 | Admiral of the Fleet (AotF) | Marshal (MAR) |
In the Royal Manticoran Navy, a commissioned officer usually has studied at Saganami Island Naval Academy as a midshipman and after graduation and training cruise receives a commission from the sovereign as an Ensign in the navy.
An officer who previously served as an enlisted spacer before receiving a commission is known colloquially as a "Mustang." In TRMN, members automatically start at E-1 upon signing up for the organization, so almost everyone is a mustang in the club.
In Honorverse canon, an enlisted spacer who is awarded the Osterman Cross is offered a commission as Ensign.
Warrant Officer
Officer can also refer to warrant rank. Warrant officers are usually long serving enlisted personnel who are offered a Warrant due to their expertise.
The warrant ranks in the Manticoran military are:
Code | Rank Title |
---|---|
W-1 | Warrant Officer 2nd Class (WO2) |
W-2 | Warrant Officer 1st Class (WO1) |
W-3 | Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) |
W-4 | Senior Chief Warrant Officer (SCWO) |
W-5 | Master Chief Warrant Officer (MCWO) |
Other uses of the word officer
Members in the highest enlisted grades are referred to as "non-commissioned officers" (NCOs).
Royal Manticoran Merchant Marine crews are led by the Ship's Master, assisted by a First Officer, and depending on the ship and crew size, a Second Officer, Third Officer, etc.

Senior Grade is also called "Captain of the List," because once a captain "makes the List," they are guaranteed promotion to Flag Rank if they survive until they are at the top of the seniority. This is analogous to "Post Captain" in Britain's Royal Navy of the 18th Century.
