Re: | Uniform Classifications and Differences (Admiralty Order 1604-05) |
This Admiralty Order will describe the differences between when to wear a Uniform, and when to follow our Con Minimum Dress Code, and explain the Day Jacket:
Part 1 – When should I opt for a Uniform, or when should I choose Civilian clothing?
A Uniform is worn based on the duties you are performing.
- For example, if you are commanding a Shore Patrol Detachment, you would be completely correct in wearing your Service Dress Uniform with the added Shore Patrol Yellow Brassard and Beret.
- Another example would be attending a TRMN Awards Banquet or Ceremony, where it would be completely correct for you to wear the highest level of Uniform you own, up to and including Mess Dress Uniform.
Civilian clothing is worn whenever you don’t wish to wear a uniform, or cannot for some reason do so.
- For example, you do not own a uniform, but still wish to help out at the recruiting table
- You are attending a function, such as a company picnic for the company you work for, you would not wear your uniform.
Part 2 – When should I not wear something TRMN related?
If you are going someplace a TRMN Uniform would not be appropriate, or would dishonor the organization, do not wear the uniform.
The same goes for TRMN Logo apparel.
These would be things such as:
- Political Rallies
- Protests
- Events of a group not related to Sci-Fi or Fandom in general
- When traveling on commercial transport (for Uniform – Logo apparel is ok in this situation)
- On a military base (unless otherwise specified – Logo apparel is ok in this situation regardless)
Part 3 – What is the difference between a Dress Code and Uniform?
A dress code is a corporate rule which lets you know what is appropriate to wear in a certain circumstance, but does not go into minute details on what articles of clothing may look like, other than to usually tell you what they cannot have. The TRMN Convention Minimum is a dress code.
A Uniform is a regimented outfit where each part is described in detail and very little to no deviation is accepted.
Part 4 – When should the Day Jacket be worn?
A Day Jacket is intended as just that, a jacket. If you are holding a recruiting event outside, wear the Day Jacket. If you are going to a Fleet event at a Renn Faire, and don’t want to get your Uniform dirty, wear the Day Jacket.
It is not a substitute for a Uniform, and would not be appropriate to wear for an Official Uniformed function, such as an Awards Ceremony.
Part 5 – Can the Day Jacket be converted to an Enlisted Service Dress Tunic?
Yes, in the same way a chef’s jacket could be converted to an RMN Officer’s Jacket. The issue is one of Look (i.e. is it consistent with what everyone else has) and Quality (i.e. using the right materials).
These conversions, however, are not preferred by Admiralty House, as the quality varies wildly, are expensive, and, if not done right, do not meet the uniform Standards laid out in the Uniform Manual, and in such case would not be appropriate for wear at TRMN functions.
Having said that, if this should be your choice of last resort, the amount of work involved to get it to meet uniform standards is extensive. Piping has to be added, the collar would need to be changed to fit the approved uniform look, pockets would need to be removed, the front zipper covered by more piping, etc.
Additionally, it would then no longer be wearable as a Day Jacket.
If you are looking for an appropriate vendor for the Enlisted Service Dress Tunic, please contact BuSupp who will put you in charge with the Vendor.
Should you have any questions regarding this, please contact to Office of the First Lord of the Admiralty.
In Honour of the Queen!
