The Protector's Own is a special squadron under the direct command of the Protector of Grayson which exists coequal to the Grayson Space Navy.[1]

History

Protector Benjamin Mayhew IX established the Protector's Own in 1914PD, using as its core the warships and volunteers of the Elysian Space Navy. The crews of the Elysian Space Navy were former State Security prisoners of war who escaped Cerberus System under the command of Admiral Harrington. Every member was offered a position in the protector's Own, and nearly one hundred sixty thousand accepted. Like service members in the Grayson Space Navy, members of the Protector's Own are entitled to Grayson citizenship following six years of honorable service.

In recognition of Fleet Admiral Harrington, its commanding officer, the emblem of the Protector's Own is a flame-enshrouded salamander.

All Protector's Own Officers and general spacers make their oath to the Protector, as do all members of the GSN, but the Protector's Own has been established as a separate service branch, legal coequal to the Grayson Space Navy, the Grayson Army, and Grayson Planetary Security. A recruitment office run at the direction of the Protector on Mayhew Steading reviews applications and administers qualification testing quarterly.[1]

The Royal Manticoran Navy, The Official Honor Harrington Fan Association

Within The Royal Manticoran Navy: The Official Honor Harrington Fan Association, Inc.., assignment to the Protector’s Own is one of the highest honors for chapters of the Grayson Space Navy. Those ships added to the squadron are considered to exemplify the very best in unswerving duty and service to the entire organization, with demonstrated and conspicuous accomplishment and achievement in the Grayson Space Navy in particular.

Eligibility for consideration is limited to chapters of the Grayson Space Navy.

Units of the Protector's Own

  • There are no units currently assigned to the Protector's Own Squadron

Award Particulars

When a warship’s distinctions get its name added to the Protector's Own, all crew members who served in the action that achieved this distinction at that time are authorized to display the List of Honor Citation (GSN). An alternate criteria for the List of Honor Citation (GSN) is if a Grayson Space Navy chapter has been mentioned in an Honorverse novel and it is clear that it is based on a The Royal Manticoran Navy: The Official Honor Harrington Fan Association, Inc. chapter.

The award is worn on the right hand side of the uniform, above the pocket flap.

As there is a limit to the amount of Unit Awards that may be displayed above the right pocket, six (6), only one List of Honor Citation (Chapter) Ribbon may be displayed at any given time, and there is no way to indicate multiple awards.

If members have previously earned the Royal Manticoran Navy List of Honor Citation ribbon with Gold Scroll device, the member may elect to replace it with the Grayson Space Navy variation with Gold Crossed Swords, or continue to wear the previously earned variation.

Nomination

Those holding a billet of ship commanding officer or above may submit their chapter, or a worthy nominee, to the Grayson Honor Society Selection Committee when nominations are solicited (usually September to November).

The Selection Committee will consider all submitted nominations for intense vetting. Chapters will be considered based on their contributions to the Grayson Space Navy and to The Royal Manticoran Navy, The Official Honor Harrington Fan Association as a whole, timeliness of Chapter reporting, activities during the nomination period, and other criteria at the discretion of the Selection Committee. This honor is granted to a chapter which has gone above and beyond as a whole unit. Raising a large sum of money for charity, administering a Toys-For-Tots drive, fielding a team of walkers for a cancer walk, all the above would all be examples of the type of service the Committee would find acceptable.

However, merely doing one of those things will not necessarily qualify a chapter, and the examples provided are not exhaustive.

Nomination e-mails should be as detailed as possible and include any available supporting documentation to support the nomination. This should include letters of support, After-Action Reports that cover the events in the nomination, and any other documentation deemed relevant to the nomination. Any supporting documentation should be attached to the nomination e-mail as attachments. Failure to provide sufficient detail may result in a nomination being declined. Remember that service is a paramount requirement and may be a decisive factor in determining selection for induction to the Protector’s Own. If a chapter is selected for the Protector’s Own, they will be named on the 21st of December as part of the Protector’s Birthday celebrations. The honoree(s) are announced on the TRMN Forums as well as on the Grayson Space Navy’s various social media accounts.

Chapter appointments are for the life of the chapter; if an honored chapter subsequently decommissions, they will forfeit their appointment to the squadron, however, if an honored chapter subsequently upgrades to a larger hull, the honor will transfer to the new command.

Selection Committee

The Selection Committee will be empaneled from members of the Office of the High Admiral. The Selection Committee will begin deliberations following the closing of the nomination period (usually in November). Acceptance of new chapters to the Protector’s Own will be by majority vote.

The Selection Committee will consist of the following:

  • 1. High Admiral of the Grayson Space Navy or their designee (Chair)
  • 2. Chief of Staff of the Grayson Space Navy or their designee
  • 3. Senior Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, GSN or their designee

Honorees

Chapters

Chapters honored with admission to the Protector’s Own Squadron display a gold rope border on their unit badge in lieu of the standard white rope border. This change remains in effect for so long as the chapter is a member of the Protector’s Own Squadron. If the chapter decommissions, the badge shall revert to a white rope border. If the chapter upgrades, the old name’s badge reverts to a white rope border and the new name’s badge takes the gold rope border.

Chapter Members

All chapter members, regardless of when they joined the chapter, will wear the modified unit patch as described above, as well as the distinctive Protector’s Own Squadron patch in lieu of the standard Grayson Space Navy patch, in accordance with Grayson Space Navy uniform regulations.

Chapter Decommissioning or Personnel Transfer

Members of a Protector’s Own chapter that decommissions are no longer authorized to display the distinctive Protector’s Own Squadron patch. Likewise, personnel that transfer off a Protector’s Own chapter are no longer authorized to display the distinctive Protector’s Own Squadron patch. In both instances the member should revert to wearing the standard Grayson Space Navy patch in accordance with Grayson Space Navy regulations.

Chapter Members During the Award Period ONLY

All members of the Chapter during the time period covered in the award are authorized to display the List of Honor Citation with Gold Crossed Swords subject to the limitations on the List of Honor Citation described above. The awarding authority will generate a list of all Chapter members from MEDUSA and will attach that list to the record. Once earned, a member is authorized to display the List of Honor Citation ribbon in perpetuity, regardless of duty station or assignment.
