Introduction

The Merchant Marine Specialty School trains merchant spacers to move into a range of ship- and planet-bound specializations that support the vast merchant marine enterprise. These highly specialized course sequences allow merchant spacers to pursue one of four specialized rank sequences and/or to take on specific billets within TRMN. The four specialized departments are Engineering, Deck, Catering, and Medical, while a General Endorsement school covers a range of topics from security, crowd management, and small boat handling (coxswain).

Finally, the Merchant Marine Specialty School offers a limited opportunity to pursue course credit from ‘real world’ third-party engineering, deck, catering, and health industry courses through an External Studies program. Recommended are free courses available through the Alison.com learning management system. BuTrain has ‘pre-approved’ a number of these courses in the four areas, and each has been given a MEDUSA course name that directly mirrors the Alison course title.

Engineering Department

The Engineering Department course sequence introduces and then expands the knowledge base of merchant spacers in the area of ship-board engineering. From the entry level position of Wiper to a watch-standing engineering officer, the sequence introduces the student to the concepts of maintaining environmental systems, hydroponics, impeller and hyper drive systems, power distribution, electronics equipment, and fusion reactors.
