HMS Salamander (CLAC-31) was a Hydra-class LAC Carrier within Sixth Fleet. Commanded by CAPTJG John Gilfillan, Salamander claimed Houston, TX as her charter city.
History
Commissioned as an upgrade from HMS Princess Samantha (CA-100) in June of 2015 under the command of Captain of the List Karolyn Byers, Salamander was initially assigned to Third Fleet, out of Waynesboro, VA.[1] Just over two months later, she joined HMS Specter and HMS Devastation in the activation of CLACDIV 624.[2] Unfortunately, due to an inability to fill the command triad, the ship was decommissioned and placed into Active Reserve in November of 2016.[3]
Salamander was returned to service in late February, 2018, under the command of Captain (Junior Grade) John Gilfillan, this time in Sixth Fleet as an upgrade from HMS Titan (SD-160)[4] Beating her prior incarnation's record, this iteration was assigned to an echelon unit in just over a week, taking her place in TG 61.1 in early March.[5] Assigned to CLACDiv 654 some point over the subsequent two years, Salamander was returned to detached operation within TG 61.1 in February of 2020.[6] With her crew being transferred entirely over to the newly commissioned RHNS Tourbillion, HMS Salamander was decommissioned and returned to the Active Reserve.[7]
