Re: Official Signature Blocks (Admiralty Order 1701-06)

As of the date of this Order, the following shall be the official and correct way to sign signature blocks.

This Admiralty Order overrides and rescinds Naval Directive 17JA-02 and Corps Directive 01-1701.

Due to the confusion over how signatures should be listed in official correspondence, and due to previous guidance on this subject being ignored, and slightly incorrect information in two previous Directives, this Admiralty Order will lay out how to properly do a signature block for official correspondence at all levels of TRMN.

A Signature will contain the following.

  • LINE 1: NAME (FIRST LAST), any post-nominals, limited to the top six as follows: three Knighthoods maximum, and three additional award post-nominals maximum. These three should be the highest you have earned. The exception to this rule is the PMV and QCB. If you have either or both of those, they are always to be listed, and listed before any Knighthoods. Lord/Lady and Sir/Dame are *NOT* to be used in the signature block
  • LINE 2: RANK, followed by Branch (RMN, RMMC, RMA, GSN, RHN, IAM, RMMM, SFS, RMAC, etc). This Branch should be aligned with the last post-nominal so that both end at roughly the same place.
  • LINE 3: POSITION (This is either the *highest* title you have, or the title for which you are sending the message from)
  • LINE 4: PEERAGE TITLE, PEERAGE LAND (If you are the first of your line, you do not list your ordinal number. If you are the Second, Third, Fourth, etc., you list that *prior* to your Peerage Title)

Signature blocks will be a maximum of four lines as set forth above. This Admiralty Order replaces any and all previous guidance on this topic. Please use my signature block below as your example.

In Honour of the Queen!
