Cartwright Inclusive Language Guidance
Introduction to the Cartwright Inclusive Language Guidance
This guidance was written as part of a joint project between TRMN's House of Lords and House of Commons. It went through a series of revisions until the version you see today was voted upon by both houses and accepted by the Royal Council.
The guidance is designed to assist those who want to be more inclusive of their use of language within TRMN. It isn’t expected to be something that becomes a series of rules or regulations, but more something to assist those who want to do better.
The guidance has been set up as a series of situations that you might encounter, with suggestions for inclusive language following it. Often there are a couple of suggestions where there is not one standard, and sometimes explanatory notes are included as well.
This guidance may evolve as time goes on so if you have suggestions please contact your local MP or a Peer.

Hello Spacer 1st Class Cartwright,

Situation: Email to crew member (Civilian or Peer)
Suggested Language:
Knight
(Use their preferred honorific, if unknown better to default to a rank if applicable)
Hello Dame Amy,
Or
Good day Sir Phil,
Or
Greetings Knight Justin,
Peer - Manticoran & Andermani
(Peers can pick from either gendered title, the wall of peerage on trmn.org will tell you which they’ve selected)
Hello Baron New Victoria,
Or
Greetings Countess New Dover,
In subsequent references in the email you may use “My Lord” or “My Lady” as per their selected gendered honorific. Some peers may prefer you to use their title rather than switching to “My Lord” or “My Lady”, in this case continue to address them by their title (e.g. Baron New Victoria).
Peer - Grayson
(Grayson Peerages just have one title which isn’t gendered, though subsequently you can still switch as below)
Hello Steadholder Pittman
Or
Greetings Steadholder Chernakova
In subsequent references in the email you may use “My Lord” or “My Lady” as per their selected gendered honorific. Some peers may prefer you to use their title rather than switching to “My Lord” or “My Lady”, in this case continue to address them by their title (e.g. Steadholder Maelstromm).
Peer - Havenite
(Havenite Peerages just have one title which isn’t gendered though subsequently you can still switch as below - note that although senators are a senator for life for a district, the form of address uses their surname not their district)
Hello Senator Sena
Or
Greetings Senator Foraker
In subsequent references in the email you may use “Sir” or “Ma’am” as per their selected gendered honorific. Some senators may prefer you to use their title rather than switching to “Sir” or “Ma’am”, in this case continue to address them by their title (e.g. Senator Sena).
Civilians
(If they have a gendered selected pronoun known to you, you can use their title as applicable, a peerage or knighthood would normally trump this, for female members if you don't know their marital status it is better to use Ms than Mrs/Miss)
Hello Mrs Barrow,
Or
Greetings Mr Friedline,
If the civilian identifies as non binary then use Mx as the title, unless they’ve told you they prefer something else:
Good Morning Mx Jones,
Some Civilians may prefer to use their rank or title, if they have told you that this is their preference you should do so (pairing the rank/title with their surname) E.g.
Greetings Director Bruns
Situation: Addressing a group face-to-face or virtually
Suggested Language:
Good morning/afternoon all,
Or
Members of the Grand Alliance,
Or
Fellow Spacers, Marines, Soldiers, and Civilians of the Grand Alliance,
Or
Officers, enlisted, and civilians of the Grand Alliance,
Situation: Including Pronouns
Suggested Language:
Often in profiles or social media applications you have the option to include pronouns:
(He/Him)
(She/Her)
(They/Them)
The Royal Council has also approved a motion allowing members to use pronouns in signatures (both in email and in the forums), this isn’t mandatory, but is permitted in addition to the other signature elements outlined in AO 1703-06.
