Petty Officer Third Class
Petty Officer Third Class (abbrev: PO3) is an enlisted paygrade within the Royal Manticoran Navy, the Grayson Space Navy, and the Republic of Haven Navy. It holds the equivalent military paygrade of E-4 within The Royal Manticoran Navy: The Official Honor Harrington Fan Association, Inc. and is the lowest non-commissioned officer rank. In most navies, a petty officer is never referred to by their rank, but rather their rate. So a Helmsman who earned their second stripe would not be called "Petty Officer 3rd Class," but rather "Helmsman's Mate 3rd Class."
Honorverse
In peacetime, a Petty Officer 3rd Class would have served at least two years, with six months Time in Grade. However, since there are a limited number of vacancies, there is a competitive test to determine who can be promoted. The Grayson Space Navy uniform is blue with silver stripes. The Royal Manticoran Navy is black and the color of the stripes change depending on the specialty of the spacer.
TRMN
If the spacer has completed their Basic Naval Non-Commissioned Officer Exam, and served as an Spacer 1st Class for seven months Time in Grade, they are promoted to this rank.
