Naval Directive 17JA-02 was issued 3 January 2017 under the authority of the First Space Lord. This directive establishes policy and format for signature blocks in official correspondence and communications.

Order Text

To: All Officers and Enlisted in the Royal Manticoran Navy, and all Officers and Enlisted in all Allied Navies
From: John Roberts, Fleet Admiral of the Red
Re: Official Signature Blocks (ND 17JA-02)

Due to the confusion over how signatures should be listed in official correspondence, and due to the fact that previous guidance on this subject has been ignored because it was not promulgated via Admiralty Order or Naval Directive, this Naval Directive is necessary. Therefore:

As of the date of this Order, by my hand, and by the authority of the Sovereign, Queen of Manticore Elizabeth III, I hereby Order that, effective immediately, the following (previously promulgated by RADM Diane Bulkeley) shall be the standard for all official signature blocks:

Lord/Lady (if a landed peer) Sir/Dame (if knighted) NAME, any post nominals awarded, limited to the top 3 ONLY
Rank (For all positions other than those on the Royal Council, also append RMMC, RMA, RMN, RHN, GSN, etc..)
Position (If you have more than one hat, please use the proper position for the official correspondence, i.e., do not sign it as Chief of Staff, BuComm if you are posting as a Squadron CO, etc…)
Ordinal number, level, and Landed Peerage (if any)

Signature will be a maximum of four lines as set forth above. This Directive is in accordance with the guidance previously issued, and recently affirmed, by the Bureau of Communications. Please see my signature block, below, for an example.

This order made under my hand will be effective 0001 hours 03-JAN-17

In Honour of the Queen!

Issued by:
Lord Sir John Roberts, GCE, SC, OR
Fleet Admiral of the Red
First Space Lord
First Earl, New Mecklenberg

NOTES

Questions to and answers from the First Space Lord in response to the post:

Q1: So would the usage be Commanding Officer (LINE) HMS Demon (CLAC-62), or both on the same line, leaving the 4th line empty?
A1: 4th line is for landed peers only. If you're a Baron or Earl, you use the 4th line of the signature.
