Template talk:Titles nobility
I HAVE MOVED THE FOLLOWING COMMENTS FROM the "DUKE" ENTRY'S DISCUSSION PAGE:
Should we be including titles that are not canon and not used in TRMN?
Currently you have:
TITLES OF NOBILITY |
---|
Emperor / Empress |
King / Queen |
Prince / Princess |
Grand Duke / Grand Duchess |
Duke / Duchess |
Earl / Countess |
Baron / Baroness |
Of these, Emperor / Empress and King / Queen and Prince / Princess are used in canon, but will never be awarded in the club. I suppose that we could still have articles for these on that basis. Prince / Princess should be listed directly below King / Queen on this list of descending order of precedence.
Archduke / Archduchess and Baronet / Baronetess are not used in the SKM / SEM and I don't think any are mentioned for any other star nation in canon, so is there any reason to include them in the wiki?
The situation for Marquess / Marchioness is the same for the aforesaid non-canon titles above except that there was a mention of a Manticoran marquessate ( see http://honorverse.wikia.com/wiki/Marquessate_of_New_Dublin ) which has since been ret-conned out.
Count / Countess should be deleted as it is redundant to Earl / Countess. Historically, "Earl" was the English equivalent to "Count" (which is why Countess is the feminine version of either) and is what the SKM adopted for their peerage. If Count is used as a title anywhere in canon, it would be for a star nation other than the SKM. It, along with the german versions of these titles (as would be used in the Andermani Empire) can be covered by mention in the articles for each English/SKM title (and perhaps redirects to the SKM title's article).
One British title not listed is Viscount / Viscountess, which could have a tenuous reason for inclusion: in the very early days of TRMN, Martin created one or more members as viscounts before he was able to ascertain from Bu9 that this title is not canon for the SKM, so he "ret-connned" these away (and those awarded are no longer active in TRMN).
Overall, my recommendation would be that the list be pared down to:
TITLES OF NOBILITY
Emperor / Empress
King / Queen
Prince / Princess
Grand Duke / Grand Duchess
Duke / Duchess
Earl / Countess
Baron / Baroness
