Before filling a billet in a TRMN merchant ship, one must be qualified for that job. A person becomes qualified for a billet by gaining the endorsement for that job on their Merchant Spacer Credential (MSC). Each department has many courses that provide the education and course for each endorsement.

Before filling a billet in a TRMN merchant ship, one must be qualified for that billet. A person becomes qualified for a billet by gaining the endorsement for that billet on their Merchant Spacer Credential (MSC). Each department has many courses that provide the education and course for each endorsement.

Basic Spacer Training RMMM-0001 is required before any other endorsement courses may be taken. Completion of all rating courses in a single department is required to take that department's officer courses.

These courses are administered by the various colleges of the Merchant Fleet Academy.

The medical department oversees medical services and related activities.

Unlicensed Medical School

The Unlicensed Medical School teaches two courses for two different jobs on ships. The Sick Berth Attendant provides basic simple medical care under supervision of the nurse and or surgeon. The Senior Sick Berth Attendant is expected to know more and be able to operate with less oversight. They serve as pharmacy technicians, medical technicians, nurse’s aides, physician’s and more. All work falls into several categories: first aid and minor surgery, patient transportation, patient care, prescriptions and lab- oratory work, food service inspections, and clerical duties.

Licensed Medical School

The Licensed Medical School teaches 5 courses for 5 different jobs. Nurses work on passenger liners and on very short haul passenger ships or short haul freighters they’ll replace the Merchant Surgeon. On regular passenger ships they’ll assist the Merchant Surgeon as a normal planet-based nurse would. A Senior Nurse has more training and experience, as indicated by the additional course work, they have essentially the same job. They might supervise other nurses or take the night shift without the Surgeon. The Assistant Merchant Surgeon is generally only seen on passenger vessels. They are a fully qualified doctor, but generally do not have sufficient experience to operate on their own for months at a time. Sometimes seen on freighters that are making relatively short runs between stops in different star systems, or while being trained to advance to full merchant surgeon. A Merchant Surgeon are seen on all cargo vessels and passenger ships. On a freighter they will normally be the only surgeon. On passenger vessels they will be in charge of the medical department. The Fleet Medical Director is a planet or orbital based position that oversees the medical aspects for a company. They might cover all ships in the company, or just a section of the ships that have some commonality of operations such as a geographic base or type of ship.
