Before filling a billet in a TRMN merchant ship, one must be qualified for that billet. A person becomes qualified for a billet by gaining the endorsement for that billet on their Merchant Spacer Credential (MSC). Each department has many courses that provide the education and course for each endorsement.

Basic Spacer Training RMMM-0001 is required before any other endorsement courses may be taken.

These courses are administered by the various colleges of the Merchant Fleet Academy.

The deck department oversees navigation of the ship and loading and unloading of cargo. Passing of the specialty course and the appropriate KJLSS course makes one eligible to have one’s rank title change from for example, Spacer 2 to Ordinary Spacer.

Unlicensed Deck School

The Unlicensed Deck School offers three courses offered of unlicensed training in the deck department which cover 3 job descriptions. Ordinary Spacer is an entry level position that does housekeeping, watch standing and generally assists as told. Able Spacer is a qualified spacer who can handle most the task on the rating’s side of the deck department. The last course is for the job of Certified Bosun. They train, direct, and supervise deck personnel in ship's maintenance duties related to cargo systems, docking equipment, and general stores.

The Licensed Deck School offers courses for seven different licensed jobs within the deck department. There are two different types of Fourth Officers. Fourth Officers that are not Deck qualified are officers with no particular department training. Fourth Officer (Deck) is one of Officers In Charge of a Navigation Watch and is normally a watch stander. They are the most junior mate on the ship. The Third Officer is one of the Officers In Charge of a Navigation Watch and is normally a watch stander. They are the most senior of the officer’s holding a third mate’s certificate of competency. They normally have the collateral duty of Communications Officer. The Second Officer is one of Officers In Charge of a Navigation Watch and is normally a watch stander. They are also the ship’s astrogator in keeping with real world practice of Second Officers being the ship’s navigator. First Officer, also known as Chief Mate is in charge of the deck gang, usually via the Bosun. They are in charge of cargo loading, hull and cargo space upkeep and preservation. The job of Master is overall charge of the vessel. The job of Fleet Manager is a deck officer who handles overall management of multiple ships. Normally all the ships will be either of the same type, or on the same run or some other operational commonality.
