Before filling a billet in a TRMN merchant ship, one must be qualified for that billet. A person becomes qualified for a billet by gaining the endorsement for that billet on their Merchant Spacer Credential (MSC). Each department has many courses that provide the education and course for each endorsement.

Basic Spacer Training RMMM-0001 is required before any other endorsement courses may be taken. Completion of all rating courses in a single department is required to take that department's officer courses.

These courses are administered by the various colleges of the Merchant Fleet Academy.

The catering department oversees all food services, payroll, and accounting. They also maintain the cargo manifests. The Catering College also teaches the most courses, as they cover the most jobs, although most of the jobs only show up on passenger liners.

Unlicensed Catering School

The Unlicensed Catering School oversees the training of six different job specialties at present, but more are being added as needed. The Steward's Assistant is an entry level position that cleans and serves at table. Bakers are in charge of baking, both basic items such as bread and rolls, but also fancy foods such as cakes. The Chief Cook is in overall charge of cooking on a passenger liner and manages the other cooks and kitchen staff. On a freighter, the y are the primary cook. The Chief Steward is in charge of the hotel and serving staff on passenger liners, and on a freighter is in overall charge of the catering department which includes both the serving and cooking. The Chief Steward would also be in charge of menu planning. The Unlicensed Catering School also teaches many courses for jobs that only exist on passenger liners. These courses include Cabana Boy and Clothier. The Cabana Boy works around swimming pools and helps passengers with towels and pool maintenance. The Clothier does clothing repair, alterations and creation of special event clothing for passengers.
