''Thunderer'' was commissioned on 1 August 2016 by order of [[Bureau of Ships|BuShips]], under the command of [[CAPTJG]] Sonja Thiede.<ref name="BSD160706">[[BuShips Directive 1607-06]]</ref>  After commissioning, she was immediately assigned to [[Task Group 91.1]]'s command.  ''Thunderer'' formed [[Battle Division 202]] with {{hms|Revenge|SD-317}} in September, as part of [[Battle Squadron 2]].

She was transferred to the Active Reserve Fleet when the crew assumed command of {{hms|Guadalcanal|LPH-02}} on 13 November 2018.
