It holds the equivalent military paygrade of [[O-3]] within {{trmn}} and is usually a division head on board a ship. A Lieutenant (senior grade) is always referred to as a "lieutenant."

In peacetime, a Lieutenant (senior grade) would have served two years as an [[Lieutenant (junior grade)]], a total of four years in the service, and been reviewed by a Officer Promotion Board. However, promotion is almost always confirmed. Doctors, lawyers, and other specialists are also direct commissioned to this rank.

== TRMN ==

If the spacer has completed their [[Officers Academy | Lieutenant (senior grade) Exam]], and served as an [[Lieutenant (junior grade)]] for six months [[Time in grade | Time in Grade]], they are eligible to be promoted to this rank, but needs to confirmed by an Officer Promotion Board.
