The Space Warfare Pin is awarded to officers and enlisted men of the RMN and RMMC who have completed a rigorous set of qualifications which qualifies them as an officer of the watch RMN or Marine officer of the watch RMMC.

Historical Background

The TRMN's Space Warfare Pin is modelled roughly on the United States Navy's Surface Warfare insignia. This metal pin is worn by commissioned officers of the USN to indicate that they have achieved certain qualifications, such as officer of the deck, small boat officer, combat information center officer, shipboard engineering, damage control and quality maintenance. It is a requirement for further advancement in line officers.

A similar qualification was introduced in 1978, known as the enlisted surface warfare specialist, and it indicates that the wearer is qualified well above the normal criteria for advancement. Unlike the SWO for officers, the SWS is not required for advancement.

The Space Warfare Pin comes in two varieties: a gold one, for officers, and a silver one for enlisted personnel.

Officers

Both RMN and RMMC officers wear the same pin. Although enlisted personnel may complete the academic qualifications for this pin, they may not wear it.

Officers of the RMN who have been awarded the OSWP and who subsequently transfer to the RMMC may continue to wear the OSWP until such time as they achieve the RMMC OSWP qualifications, and vice-versa.

Both RMN and RMMC enlisted wear the same pin. Officers may wear the ESWP only provided it was earned and awarded while they were enlisted, and only until they have completed the requirements for the OSWP.

The ESWP is worn plain when first awarded. On being transferred to another unit, a numeral 2 is affixed to the centre of the pin, indicating a second deployment. A third deployment is indicated by a numeral 3; 4 and more deployments display a numeral 4.

Enlisted of the RMN who have been awarded the ESQP and who subsequently transfer to the RMMC may continue to wear the ESWP until such time as they achieve the RMMC ESQP qualifications, and vice-versa.
