Major General (abbrev: MGEN) is an flag paygrade within the Royal Manticoran Marine Corps and the Royal Manticoran Army. It holds the equivalent military paygrade of F-2 within The Royal Manticoran Navy: The Official Honor Harrington Fan Association, Inc. and is usually in command of a planetary army, but more likely a higher staff position. A soldier who has received their first star is always referred to as a "general."

Honorverse

In peacetime, a Major General would have served several years as an Brigadier General, been reviewed by a Flag Officer Promotion Board, and confirmed by the First Lord of the Admiralty in the name of the monarch. Board review is extremely difficult, as there are a limited number of billets. [1]

TRMN

If the soldier or marine has completed their Major General Exam, they are eligible to be promoted to this rank, but needs to be confirmed by a Flag Officer Promotion Board. [2] Promotions to Major General are now only by appointment, if a billet is available that requires it, such as Academy Commandant as per Admiralty Order 1510-01.
