They can also be promoted, regardless of Time In Grade or Promotion Points during a ship upgrade if the ship needs more officers. They hold the Paygrade of C-11.

In the Honorverse, a Third Engineer is an engineering officer holding a Certificate of Competency (Star Empire of Manticore and some other star nations) or a License as Third Engineer. They also hold an endorsement as Officer In Charge of an Engineering Watch. They are primarily a watchstander, standing watch in the engine room while underway. Their duties include inspection and upkeep of the life support systems and hydroponics. On a passenger liner they could be a day worker focusing life support.or hydroponics.

Third Engineers are considered Operational Level officers.

TRMN In TRMN, a Third Engineer is a merchant marine engineering officer who has completed their Merchant Marine Officer 0102 exam (Line Track), or Merchant Marine Officer 0101 exam (Staff and Service tracks), and served as a Fourth Engineer for six months Time In Grade and have sufficient Promotion Points, they are eligible to be promoted to this rank by a promotion board. They hold the Paygrade of C-12

Real World A Third Assistant Engineer, is a licensed engineering officer (US term) or certificated officer (UK term). As an engineering officer they also hold an STCW endorsement as Officer In Charge of an Engineering Watch. They could be a watch stander, standing watch in the engine room, or a day worker on ships that have an unmanned engine room. Their primary duties are being in charge of the diesel generators, water production equipment, lube oil & lube oil systems and the sludge and bilge systems.

In the UK and other Commonwealth countries they are normally designated as Fourth Engineer, specifically not using the word Assistant Engineer.

Third Assistant Engineers are considered Operational Level officers.

They also hold an endorsement as Officer In Charge of an Engineering Watch. This rank is only seen on passenger liners. They are primarily a watchstander, standing watch in the engine room while underway. Their duties would be the senior watch officer on one of the three watch sections where they oversee a Third Engineer and Technicians for that watch. The other two watch sections on a passenger liner would have a Second Engineer and a Third Engineer along with a number of Technicians.

Senior Second Assistant Engineers are considered Operational Level officers.

They hold the Paygrade of C-15

Real World The First Assistant Engineer, is a licensed engineering officer (US term) or certificated officer (UK term). As an engineering officer they also hold an STCW endorsement as Officer In Charge of an Engineering Watch. They could be a watch stander, standing watch in the engine room, or more commonly a day worker. Their primary duties are being in charge of the main engine (diesel, or gas turbine), reduction gears and main turbine on steam ships. They are in charge of the daily operation and running of the engine room and the other members of the department.

In the UK and other Commonwealth countries they are normally designated as Second Engineer, specifically not using the word Assistant Engineer. In the UK and other Commonwealth countries there is no First or First Assistant Engineer title.

First Assistant Engineers are considered Management Level officers.

Honorverse In the Honorverse, a Chief Engineer is an engineering officer holding a Certificate of Competency (Star Empire of Manticore and other star nations) or a License as Chief Engineer. They are day workers. They are in charge of the overall running of the engine department. .

Chief Engineers are considered Management Level officers. TRMN The Chief Engineer is the second highest rank on the ship, being a half step below the Master. In TRMN, a Chief Engineer is a merchant marine engineering officer who has completed their Merchant Marine Officer 0106 exam (Line Track), or Merchant Marine Officer 0103 exam (Staff track), and served as a First Engineer for eighteen months Time In Grade and have sufficient Promotion Points, they are eligible to be promoted to this rank by a promotion board. They hold the Paygrade of C-16

Real World The Chief Engineer is the head of the ship’s engine department and ranks similar to the Master, wearing 4 stripes. The Chief Engineer is a licensed engineering officer (US term) or certificated officer (UK term). As an engineering officer they also hold an STCW endorsement as Officer In Charge of an Engineering Watch.

The Chief Engineer is a day worker, and is in overall charge of the department. Their focus is often on the bigger picture than the day to day operation of the engine room.

Chief Engineers are considered Management Level officers.
