A baron or a baroness is the holder of a barony and a member of lowest rank of the peerage. Manticoran baronies are held as territories subsidiary to the Star Kingdom, so SKM barons and baronesses, while they are the administrators of their territories, are still subjects of the sovereign rather than monarchs of their baronies.
Depending on the context, the word "barony" refers either to the peerage and title of a baron or baroness, or to the territory held by a baron or baroness.
Forms of Address
A baron is addressed as "My Lord" and a baroness as "My Lady."
Those holding a barony are formally referred to in the third person as "The Baron Title," (for males) or "The Baroness Title" for females. Conventionally a a baron will be referred to as "Lord Title" (for example, "Lord Winterfall") and a baroness as "Lady Title" (for example, "Lady Bellisle"). In the most formal ceremonies and documents this is prefaced "the Right Honorable."
The word "of" is never included in baronial titles. Although the barony (in the sense of the title and territory) will be referred to, for example, as "The Barony of Winterfall," the holder would be called "Baron Winterfall" or "Lord Winterfall" (never "Baron of Winterfall" or "Lord of Winterfall").
A baron or baroness with military rank may be referred to by their rank and title instead of their rank and given name. Formal usage: Admiral the Lord Winterfall. Less formal usage: Admiral Winterfall.
In the peerage of the Star Kingdom of Manticore and in TRMN a peerage title may be held by a male or female. Baronies, like all other Manticoran peerages, are hereditary and typically the current holder will designate their eldest child as their heir, without regard to their gender. The spouse of the title holder is afforded the same title, without regard for the gender of the title holder.
The cadet (heir) of an baron or baroness (usually their eldest child) is addressed as "My Lord" (if male) or "My Lady" (if female), or "Lord/Lady [first name]" and is referred to in the third person as "Lord Firstname Lastname" (if male) or "Lady Firstname Lastname" (if female).
Children of an baron or baroness (other than the cadet) are referred to in the third person as "The Honorable Firstname Lastname." This is customarily abbreviated in written form as "Hon. Firstname Lastname." There is no special form of address for younger children of a baron or baroness.
Andermani equivalent
The Andermani Empire also awards titles of nobility, using German language equivalents to the English language titles used by the Star Kingdom of Manticore. The Andermani equivalanet of Baron is Freiherr, and Baroness is Freifrau.
